IP Protection Classes
The protection class is denoted by short symbols consisting of two code letters IP and code numbers relating to the protection class.
Example: IP65
The two digits represent different forms of environmental impact:
- The first digit indicates protection against the ingress of solid objects.
- The second digit indicates protection against the ingress of liquids.
The higher the value of each digit, the greater the protection. For example, a luminaire marked IP54 will be better protected against environmental factors than another similar luminaire marked IP42.
IP TABLE
IP.. | First Digit: Solid Object Protection | Second Digit: Liquid Ingress Protection |
---|---|---|
0 | No protection | No protection |
1 | Protection against solid objects over 50mm, e.g. hands, large tools. | Protection against vertically falling drops of water. |
2 | Protection against fingers or similar objects over 12.5mm. | Protection against vertically falling drops of water when the enclosure is tilted up to 15°. |
3 | Protection against tools, thick wires, etc. over 2.5mm. | Protection against spraying water up to 60° from vertical. |
4 | Protection against most wires, screws, etc. over 1mm. | Protection against splashing water from any direction. |
5 | Partial protection against dust ingress (no harmful deposit). | Protection against low-pressure jets of water from any direction. |
6 | Total protection against dust ingress. | Protection against strong jets of water from any direction. |
7 | N/A | Protection against the effects of immersion in water to depth between 15cm and 1m. |
8 | N/A | Protection against long periods of immersion under pressure. Additional conditions are defined by the manufacturer (e.g., the device may not be hermetically sealed but must function). |
9 | N/A | Protection against high-pressure and high-temperature water jets. |
